Oscar Overview

It was a night for upsets and sweeps.
No Country for Old Men won 4 awards including Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Directors and supporting actor

Alot of people guessed it but I didn't see Marion Cotilard winning for La Vie En Rose and I counted out Tilda Swinton for Michael Clayton but now they can call themselves Academy award winners. Now I can't wait to see those movies!

I am very glad Diablo Cody won for her screenplay for Juno!
Shocks mostly came from technical categories with Bourne Ultimatum taking 3 and Golden Compass pulling an upset from the top 2 (out of 3) Favorites for special effects.

The Academy once again chose a very elaborate and period costume driven movie (Elisabeth the Golden Age) for that amazing suit of armor Cate Blanchett wore.

One time winners include Sweeney Todd for art direction, and original score for Atonement it's only award out of seven nominations.

Congrats to Oscar winners we hope to see more of you!

Here are my guesses for Oscar winners in technical categories

Original Screen Play Nominees
Juno
Michael Clayton
Ratatouille
The Savages
Lars and The Real girl

Should and will win: Diablo Cody's brilliant first script for Juno has been winning all the major awards and finally a nominee from Juno has lock on a caregory but some say men in the academy may go for Michael Clayton as well.

Adapted Screenplay Nominees:
No Country For Old Men
There Will Be Blood
The Diving Bell & The Butterfly
Away From Her
Atonement

Should Win: I am rooting for fellow Canadian Sarah Polley for her try as writer/director Sarah Polley but some say her script isn't as strong as other heavyweights in the category.

Will Win: This could be one of NCFOM sweep categories

Editing Nominees:
No Country For Old Men
The Bourne Ultimatum
The Diving Bell & The Butterfly
Into The Wild
There Will Be Blood

Should Win: Bourne was a very editing driven movie and I liked it alot

Will Win: *sigh* Another win for NCFOM

Art Direction Nominees:
Sweeney Todd
There Will Be Blood
The Golden Compass
Atonement
American Gangster

Should Win: Sweeney Todd was amazing

Will Win: Sweeney but There will be blood is a contender

Cinematography Nominees:
Assasination of Jesse James...
There Will Be Blood
The Diving Bell & The Butterfly
No Country for Old Men
Atonement

Should Win: Atonement
Will Win: A tie for me between Assasination and Atonement

Costume Deign Nominees:
Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Across the Universe
Sweeney Todd
La Vie en Rose
Atonement

Should Win: All I could think of through Elisabeth was what great costumes there were, but I loved Sweeney Todd's costumes more. But there has been lots of talk about Atonement's green dress

Will Win: Tie between Sweeney Todd and Atonement

Makeup nominees:
POTC: At worlds End
La Vie en Rose
Norbit

Should and Will Win: La Vie en Rose the aging process is cool. If Norbit wins I will scream although it was impressive (the makeup)

Visual Effects Nominees:
Transformers
Golden Compass
Pirates of The Carribean At Worlds End

Should and Will Win: Transformers although Golden Compass was cool

Original Score Nominees:
Atonement
Ratatouille
Michael Clayton
The Kite Runner
3:10 to Yuma

Should Win and Will Win: No freaking clue. Either Atonement or Ratatouille 3:10 to Yuma's score was also good.

Original Song Nominees:
Falling Slowly: Once
That's How You Know: Enchanted
Happy Working Song: Enchanted
So Close: Enchanted
Raise It Up: August Rush

Should and Will Win: Falling Slowly from Once is a great song but don't count out the legendary Menken from Disney for his songs from Enchanted.

Sound Editing Nominees:
The Bourne Ultimatum
No Country for Old Men
Ratatouille
There Will Be Blood
Transformers

Should Win: No Idea

Will Win: Um let's say Bourne?

Sound Mixing Nominees:
Transformers
The Bourne Ultimatum
3:10 to Yuma
No Country for Old Men
Ratatouille

Should Win: again no idea. Let's just go with Transformers (because people said it was loud :P) or one of my faves Ratatouille

Will Win: Transformers or Ratatouille

Thanks for reading happy watching on Sunday February 24 8 pm!
It's that time of year again and for my first post I will pick my favorites for the year.
Best Picture Nominees
No Country For Old Men
Juno
Micheal Clayton
There Will Be Blood
Atonement

Should Win: Solely on reviews and other prediction sites, I hear No Country is boring and the ending stunk. There Will Be Blood is too dark for the Academy and Michael Clayton is too conventional. Also Atonement had mixed reviews critics either loved it or hated it.I absolutely adored Juno and was my personal favorite of the year.

Will Win: All hints lead to No Country but I will still be routing for a Juno upset.
Best Actress in a Leading Role Nominees:
Julie Christie: Away From Her
Ellen Page: Juno
Laura Linney: The Savages
Cate Blanchett: Elisabeth The Golden Age
Marion Cotilard: La Vie En Rose

Should Win: Ellen Page made the whole movie theater want to laugh and cry at the same time. Not bad for a 20 year old. Cate Blanchett was good but a little boring and dull in her reprise roll of Queen Elisabeth the first. Julie Christie was also very good but she bored me and I thought her opposite Gordon Pinsent was better in Away From Her. Laura Linney was a surprise to be nominated but well deserved. Marion Cotilard is a few major critics choices but voters may not vote for her solely because the movie was subtitled.

Will Win: All hints again lead to Julie Christie (the academy likes old folks see last years winner Helen Mirren) But I will root for an Ellen Page upset in this category.
Best Actor in a Leading Role Nominees:
George Clooney: Michael Clayton
Daniel Day Lewis: There Will Be Blood
Viggo Mortensen: Eastern Promises
Johnny Depp: Sweeney Todd
Tommy Lee Jones: In the Valley of Elah

Should win: apparently DDL is bone chilling in TWBB and won all of the previous awards and many websites are calling for his win. But Johnny Depp could get a deserved award too.

Will win: Do I have to say it? Daniel Day Lewis has this locked up.

Best Director nominees:
Coen Brothers: No Country for Old Men
Tony Gilroy: Michael Clayton
Jason Reitman: Juno
Julian Schnabel: The Diving Bell and Butterfly
Paul Thomas Anderson: There Will Be Blood

Should and Will win: The Coen brothers are long due for their hugely critcally acclaimed NCFOM. But again I will pray for a Juno upset with Jason Reitman.

Best Supporting Actress Nominees
Ruby Dee: American Gangster
Tilda Swinton: Michael Clayton
Cate Blanchett: I'm Not There
Amy Ryan: Gone Baby Gone
Saoirse Ronan: Atonement

Should Win: It's a real horse race such an open category gonna say all should and can win.

Will win: Well let's see critics say Tilda Swinton gave a physically and emotionally great performance, Amy Ryan has been getting alot of buzz and Ruby Dee could get a win for her career background and Saoirse Ronan is a little young (14!) But it wouldn't be the first time an oscar has gone to a young person. I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and say Cate Blancett.

Best Supporting Actor Nominees:
Javier Bardem: No Country for Old Men
Phillip Seymour Hoffman: Charlie Wilson's War
Casey Affleck: The Assassination of Jesse James...
Tom Wilkinson: Michael Clayton
Hal Holbrook: Into the Wild

Should and Will win: Again Javier has the lock on this one but I wouldn't mind a Casey Affleck upset
